HOW FAR AHEAD OF INDIA IS CHINA?
India is a decade behind China as far as the basic indicators of income are considered. The $9-tn Chinese economy dwarfs the $2-tn Indian economy on almost every count. China was a $2 tn economy in 2002. So India is 11 years behind China in the grand sweepstakes. Take a look at the consumption data. There is almost no difference between the two countries as far as mobile subscribers per 1,000 people is considered, but the gap is around eight years when one considers passenger cars. India currently has 12 cars per 1,000 people, a level that China crossed in 2004. read more

"There is no scam in the coal sector during the UPA govt. Coal blocks are being allocated since 1993 and we have followed the process. The previous NDA govt had allocated 43 coal blocks during its tenure. How can you say that all govts indulged in scam in coal block allocation?"

Sriprakash Jaiswal,
Coal Minister
"This (2012) was a difficult year for the economy including for revenue collection because there were less imports and manufacturing activity was also slackening. The customs and excise officials should make their best efforts to achieve the target. There is still 7 weeks to go (for the fiscal to end). So they should make efforts to reach as much close to the target as possible."

P Chidambaram
Finance Minister
"Anybody on the Republican side even thinking or talking about running for president in 2016, I've said needs to get their head examined and the reason I say that is we've lost two presidential elections in a row. We need to be winning the debate of ideas - then we'll win elections."
