AMAR SINGH ARRESTED IN CASH-FOR-VOTES SCAM
In a dramatic turn of events, Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh was on Tuesday arrested in connection with the 2008 cash-for-vote scam when he appeared before a local court after initially claiming that he was too ill to attend proceedings. EXPERT VIEWS

"SLR at 24%, CRR at 6% is still considered high. At some point it [CRR, SLR combined] was 65% and now it is 30%. It is our objective in RBI to bring it down but in a calibrated way. We should bring it (SLR) down so that credit is available and so that private sector is not crowded out."

Mobile tariffs will rise significantly in the coming months, because operators will try to offset the lower revenue from rural markets, where users typically make fewer phone calls than in cities and towns. So far, operators in the country boasted the lowest tariffs in the world. But increasing pressure on margins and rising costs have forced operators to increase tariffs."

"I don't believe that the United States or the world will go into a double-dip but there's high degrees of uncertainty. Europe Union had to consider working closer in the area of fiscal policy to address the problems facing its members. One direction is to deepen the fiscal union."
