BREAKING NEWS
ANNA SENT TO TIHAR JAIL; 7-DAY JUDICIAL CUSTODY
Police arrested leading anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare on Tuesday, just hours before he was due to begin a fast unto death. At least 1,200 followers of the 74-year-old Hazare were also detained, signalling a hardline stance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against anti-government protests, a gamble that risks a wider backlash against the ruling Congress party. "The second freedom struggle has started ... This is a fight for change," Hazare said in a pre-recorded message broadcast on YouTube. The question for many is whether Hazare and his movement will grow across the fast-urbanising nation of 1.2 billion people. Home Minister P Chidambaram said Hazare and six other protest leaders including Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi had been placed under "preventative arrest" to ensure they did not carry out a threat to protest. Both houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day after the Opposition protested at the arrests of Hazare and his key aides. read more
MASS PROTESTS ACROSS INDIA
Anna Hazare's arrest has provoked countrywide agitation. At Delhi's India Gate there were candlelight protests. Earliest in the day citizens were seen protesting across the country. In Mumbai, 40 'India Against Corruption' supporters were detained at Nerul. Pro-Anna supporters were also detained from Dadar and Matunga areas of the maximum city. In Surat's Varachcha area, Anna supporters shut down the diamond market while in Godhra there was a transport strike. In Chandigarh, some supporters surrounded Kapil Sibal's residence. In Delhi, supporters were seen shouting slogans outside the Rajouri Garden. read more

EXPERT VIEWS

"My dear countrymen, second freedom struggle has begun and now I have also been arrested. But will this movement be stopped by my arrest. No not at all. Don't let it happen. Time has come my countrymen when there should be no place left in jails in India to accommodate any more persons."

Anna Hazare
Social Activist
"The arrest of Anna Hazare and Team Anna is very unfortunate. Anna should have waited for Parliament to take a call instead of going on an indefinite fast. The government, it appears, believes this protest is mainly a media creation and that there will be a few lakhs protesting over the country in 500 cities but it won't go beyond that."

Rahul Bajaj
Rajya Sabha MP
"India will get a sure gold medal if corruption is entered as an item in the Olympic Games. We may not be a force in football or athletics or hockey. But India is the undisputed global leader in corruption."
