| | | SENSEX TUMBLES 305 PTS; DIPS BELOW 18K INTRA-DAY An unstoppable sell-off for fifth consecutive session dragged the indices to five-month lows on Tuesday despite positive global cues. Sensex slipped below the 18,000 level in intraday trade for the first time since August 31, 2010. However, the Nifty managed to hold the 5400-mark, which seems like a major support for the time being. Sensex closed the day at 18,022.22 points, while Nifty fell 88.70 points to settle at 5,417.20. All sectoral indices ended in red. Realty index saw a 4% cut, while auto, capital goods, oil & gas and FMCG indices were down 2-3%. Heavyweight RIL broke the Rs 900-mark and ended 2.6% lower. Tata Motors was the biggest loser on Nifty with 7% fall despite higher January sales numbers. read more | | | | | | | | AT A GLANCE | | BSE | 18022.22 | -305.54 | | NSE | 5417.2 | -88.7 | | TURNOVER Rs. 139,629 cr | | BSE CASH Rs. 3,374 cr | | NSE CASH Rs. 13,509 cr | | NSE F&O Rs. 122,745 cr | | | | BULLION | | GOLD | 19905 | -17 | | SILVER | 43654 | +14 | | | | CRUDE | | WTI | 91.76 | -0.43 | | BRENT | 4604.73 | -23.73 | | | | FOREX | | $ / Re | 45.69 | -0.21 | | £ / Re | 73.575 | +0.22 | | € / Re | 62.837 | +0.13 | | | EVENTS 2 February CII National Retail Summit 2011 " Modern Retail: Driving Inclusive & profitable Growth", Taj Lands End, Mumbai 2 February "The International Climate Change Exhibition ICCE 2011", Taj Palace, New Delhi 2 February CII Special Session For FMCG " The Next Frontier: Serving The New Consumer", Taj Lands End, Mumbai 3 February Assocham 2nd International Coal Conference- Securing Future Needs, The Park, New Delhi 3 February Conference On Excellence In Diagonostic Care "Creating A Value Chain To Deliver An Excellent Customer Experience", India Habitat Centre, New Delhi 3 February 2nd Coal Conference, The Park, New Delhi | | | | | EXPERT VIEWS |
| | "We were present in big businesses of cement and aluminium and with acquisition in carbon black, we are present in another big business. Now we stand at a place where we are the tenth largest in cement. Other than Nuvo (Aditya Birla Nuvo), other companies are pure-play and are already dominant players. So what we want is to become leaders in each of the businesses where we are present (by 2015)."
Kumar Mangalam Birla Chairman, AV Birla Group "The pre-crisis pattern of global imbalances is re-emerging. Growth in economies with large external deficits, like the US, is still being driven by domestic demand. And growth in economies with large external surpluses, like China and Germany, is still being powered by exports. As tensions between countries increase, we could see rising protectionism - of trade and of finance. And as tensions within countries increase, we could see rising social and political instability within nations - even war."
Dominique Stauss-Kahn MD, IMF "I remain optimistic and cautious, these negotiations (Doha deal) are complex, but we should be able to settle matters. We have all recognised that 2011 provides a window of opportunity, we will collectively endeavour to close the remaining gaps."
